Gate Won't Close? Here's How to Fix It

Why "Won't Close" Is Different from "Won't Open"

Automatic gates have safety systems that monitor the closing path more strictly than the opening path. The reason: a closing gate can hit a person, pet, or vehicle. Almost every UL 325 operator will refuse to close if any safety input reports an obstruction.

So when a gate opens fine but won't close, look at the safety inputs first.

1. Photo Eyes Out of Alignment

By far the #1 cause. The closing-direction photo eyes (some operators have separate sets for open and close) are blocked or misaligned. Clean both lenses, verify both LEDs are solid green or red — whichever the brand uses for "clear path." Blinking = misaligned.

2. Safety Edge Triggered

Sliding gates often have a safety edge — a rubber strip along the leading edge that reverses the gate if it touches anything. If the edge wire is cut, the board reads it as constantly triggered and refuses to close. Inspect the wire from the edge back to the operator.

3. Reverse-on-Obstacle Set Too Sensitive

Most operators have a force/sensitivity adjustment. If wind is pushing the gate enough to trigger the obstruction sense, the gate will start to close, feel resistance, and reverse. Adjust the close-direction force setting up slightly.

4. Limit Switch Misadjusted

If the closed-position limit is set past the actual stop point, the operator runs the gate into the latch post, draws overcurrent, and reverses. Adjust the limit to stop just as the gate fully closes.

5. Loop Detector Stuck

If you have a buried exit loop and the detector is locked on (failed or shorted loop), it tells the operator there's a vehicle in the gate path indefinitely, and the gate won't close. Unplug loop leads from the detector as a test.

6. Timer-to-Close Disabled

If your gate used to close automatically and now doesn't, but works fine on a remote close command, the timer-to-close setting was disabled or reset to zero. Check the board settings.

Quick 5-Minute Test

Clean both photo eye lenses. Re-align until both LEDs are solid. Try to close. If it works, you're done. If not, the next stop is the safety edge or the loop — both of which take a meter to diagnose properly.
