How to Reset and Reprogram a Gate Opener Remote

Lost remote, new remote, or remote suddenly stopped working? Here's how to reset and re-pair the most common gate opener remotes in under 5 minutes.

Before You Reset Anything

Try a fresh battery first. 80% of "dead remote" calls are actually a dead battery. Most gate remotes use a CR2032 coin cell or a 12V A23. Swap it, try the remote at the operator (not at the curb), and see if it works.

If a fresh battery doesn't help, the remote needs to be re-paired to the receiver. The procedure depends on the brand.

LiftMaster Security+ 2.0

On the operator's control board, find the LEARN button (usually yellow or purple). Press and release — do not hold. The LEARN LED stays solid for 30 seconds. Within that window, press the remote button twice. The LED blinks once to confirm pairing. Done.

To erase all remotes from a receiver, press and hold the LEARN button for 6 seconds until the LED goes out. Every previously paired remote will need to be re-added.

FAAC XT2/XT4 Remotes

FAAC uses a receiver module (RP, RP2, or built-in). Locate the small button on the receiver labeled P1 (channel 1). Press and release. The LED illuminates for ~5 seconds. Press any button on the remote during that window. The LED blinks twice — paired.

Viking Remotes

Viking K-2 and G-5 controllers: open the controller cover, find the RX learn button on the radio receiver board. Press once. LED blinks. Press the remote button you want assigned. LED stays on briefly to confirm.

Linear Multi-Code and AccessMaster

Older Linear/Multi-Code remotes use DIP switches inside the remote that must match the receiver's DIP switches exactly. Open both, set the switches in the same pattern, replace the cover. No "pairing" required — they just have to match.

DoorKing (DKS)

DKS uses a Microclik receiver on most installations. Press the learn button on the receiver once, then press any button on the remote. LED blinks confirmation.

Still Doesn't Work?

If pairing fails repeatedly, the receiver itself may be dead — surge damage is the usual cause. A tech can confirm with a meter and swap the receiver in under 20 minutes.
