LiftMaster Gate Operator Error Codes Explained
Your LiftMaster operator is flashing an error code or showing a digit on the display. Here's what each one actually means.
Where to Find the Code
On the LA400, CSL24V, and CSW24V, the diagnostic display is a single-digit or two-character LED on the control board. The operator must be powered and the board cover open to read it.
Codes are stored even after the fault clears — you may see a historical code that's no longer active. Power-cycle the operator to clear stored codes.
ER1 — Photo Eye Fault
Monitored photo eyes failed self-check. Causes: misalignment, dirty lens, cut sensor wire, or a non-monitored photo eye on an input that expects monitored. Clean and align both eyes; verify both LEDs are solid.
ER2 — Safety Edge Fault
Edge sensor open-circuit or short. Most often a broken wire at the edge connection point on a sliding gate. Inspect the wire run from the edge to the operator — rodents love these wires.
ER3 — Communications Fault
Loss of communication between primary and secondary boards (dual-gate setups). Check the data wire between the two operators. A storm-damaged board on either end can also throw this.
ER4 — Overcurrent
The motor is drawing more current than the board allows. Causes: binding gate (drag, debris, seized roller), failing motor, or overly tight current limit setting. Run the gate manually with the disconnect engaged — if it binds, fix the mechanical issue first.
ER5 — Excessive Motor Run Time
The motor has been running longer than the timeout setting without reaching a limit. Causes: misadjusted or failed limit switch, broken chain, or stripped gearbox. The operator is running but not getting feedback that the gate moved.
ER6 — Battery Fault
Backup battery is low, missing, or failed self-test. Most LiftMaster residential operators ship with a 12V backup battery that lasts 2–3 years in Florida heat. If yours is older than that, replace it.
ER7 — Loop Detector Fault
Loop tuning failed or the loop is shorted. Inspect the loop wire splice inside the operator — corrosion is the typical cause. If the loop wire itself is cut under the driveway, that's a bigger fix.
ER8 — Limit Switch Fault
Both limit switches active simultaneously, or no limit switch active when one should be. Usually a magnet that fell off the gate or a cam that vibrated out of position. 10-minute fix.
ER9 — Board / Internal Fault
The board's internal self-test failed. Usually means board replacement. Try a full power cycle first — a clean restart sometimes clears a transient fault.
If There's No Code, Just No Behavior
No code at all and no response from the operator usually means power: tripped GFCI, failed transformer, or the board took a surge hit that killed it outright (no power = no display). Check the supply side before assuming the worst.
